Rose Brooch

I have been making these brooches for many years in all colours, I based them on this little rose tree in my garden (the crocheted brooch and the real rose are about the same size).
This is the first time I have written the pattern out (its embeded in my brain) and as valentines is near, why not make yourself a rose brooch.
The pattern starts with a row of loops
Red Rose Brooch (or any colour rose brooch you prefer)
DK yarn/ Light worsted weight
3.75 mm (5 / F) hook
Brooch Back
Abbreviations:
st – Stitch
sts – Stitches
dc (UK)/ sc (USA) – Double Crochet (UK)/ Single Crochet (USA)
tr(UK)/ dc (USA) – Treble Crochet (UK)/ Double Crochet (USA)
ch – Chain

Row: 1
[Ch 10, 1 dc UK/(1 sc USA) into the 8th ch from the hook] X 7
(You should now have 7 loops)
[Ch 8, 1 dc UK/(1 sc USA) into the 6th ch from the hook] X 5
(You should now have 12 loops)
[Ch 6, 1 dc UK/(1 sc USA) into the 4th ch from the hook] X 4
(You should now have 16 loops)

Row 2
3 ch,
Into the 1st 4 ch loop
3 tr UK/ (3 dc USA) , 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into 2nd 4 ch loop
4 tr UK/ (4 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 4 ch loop
4 tr UK/ (4 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 4ch loop
4 tr UK/ (4 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops

Into the next 6 ch loop
5 tr UK/ (5 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 6 ch loop
6 tr UK/ (6 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 6 ch loop6
7 tr UK/ (7 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 6 ch loop
8 tr UK/ (8 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 6 ch loop
11 tr UK/ (11 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops

Into the next 8 ch loop
14 tr UK/ (14 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 8 ch loop
13 tr UK/ (13 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 8 ch loop
15 tr UK/ (15 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 8 ch loop
13 tr UK/ (13 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 8 ch loop
14 tr UK/ (14 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 8 ch loop
15 tr UK/ (15 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Into the next 8 ch loop
13 tr UK/ (13 dc USA), 1 dc/ (1 sc USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
You should have something that looks like this
Starting with the larger loops twist 4 loops as in the photo
Twist the next 4 on top so you can see the 4 below
continue until it looks like a rose
Sew into the back to hold all the layers together
Sew on a brooch back and wear

  2. Wow, I love the rose brooch. I have been making various flower brooches, none are as nice as your rose. I am going to have to have a go. Many thanks for sharing.

  4. Very thoughtful of you to include clarification as to the st methods.
Newbies often fall short of realizing there's a difference. The unawarenss leads to disappointment in executing the pattern.
Your effort has prevented the happening.
    Many thanks!!!!

  7. I'm not new at crocheting but am new to novelty items. Can anyone tell me how you finish off once you're done with the last loop? Also, it says to sew into the back to hold it all together, Can anyone explain a little more detailed?

  8. lagardner cut yarn leaving a long length to use for sewing and pull yarn through last stitch the same as with "normal" crochet.
I just used a darning needle and keep going in and out of the petals from the back until everything felt firm than added the brooch back

  14. Hi,

I'm really excited to make these for stocking stuffers, but I'm a bit confused because I'm new at crocheting. I got the first row finished, but I sooo don't understand the instructions for Row 2. You chain three, then...? Eep - thanks for any help you can give (and for the patience!)

  15. Hi Maria

In row 1 you made loops in row 2 you only make stitches in 2 places - inside the loops and between the loops. So when you chain three, the 3 trebles if you are following UK instructions or 3 double crochets if you are following USA instructions all go into the last loop you made.
For the 1dc(UK)/ 1 sc(USA) over the two ch in-between the loops
Put hook under the 2 chains in-between the loops, yarn over the hook (there should now be 2 loops on your hook) than put the hook over the 2 chains, yarn over again and bring through the other 2 loops on your hook.Hope that helps

  21. Hi there,

This is a question for the webmaster/admin here at nezumiworld.blogspot.com.

Can I use some of the information from this post above if I give a link back to your site?

    Thanks,
    Charlie

  22. Hi Charlie
You can link the post (as boinky did, please refer to her post) but copying the information to repost elsewhere is both infringing copyright and in general not a very nice thing to do.

  28. This is the type of pattern you need to make and the process than make sense. The good thing is if you put an extra treble or double in it does not tend to show :)

  35. Just finished the rose brooch and had no problems with it. When I started to finish the rose I sewed the petals as I was working them around and made sure I position them between each other and the Rose turned out beautiful. I also made the rose with virgated yarn. Thank you for the pattern.

  46. I am very confused on this. I'm
not understanding row one. I made ten crochet chains then did a single crochet in the eigth chain, but I don't understand how there is supposed to be seven loops please help. According to the pictures, it looks like a long chain with the loops made onto that chain. Do you make a chain to start with?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi Minny
You have done it correct but need to repeat make 10 chain then do a single crochet in the eigth chain 6 more times and you will have 7 loops.

I have never made a flower before but I was so happy with how it turned out. I'm actually going to sew it on a hat I just finished. Simply yet so pretty. Thank you, Kathy from Oz.
